Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose a therapist?
I recommend you find different therapists, read their bios, and interview them so you can get a feel for who you are meeting with. I like to think that therapy is similar to dating. It has to be a good fit or you won’t have a positive experience. I want all clients to feel comfortable to tell me if I do or don’t feel like a good fit for them personally. If I’m not, I would love to help assist in finding a great fitting counselor for each individual. .
What can I expect from therapy?
In therapy, you can expect a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings, work through challenges, and develop coping strategies. It’s a process of self-discovery and growth, and while it can be tough at times, it’s also a path toward healing and understanding yourself and your story better.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, therapy is completely confidential and what is shared during sessions, stays in session. There are only 3 reasons why confidentiality would have to be broken which are discussed on intake to ensure each client knows their rights and the practices policies and procedures. 1. Risk of Harm to Self or Others. 2. Suspected Abuse or Neglect. 3. Court Order or Legal Requirement.
Is therapy hard?
Therapy can be challenging at times, as it often involves facing tough emotions and difficult truths. But remember, this discomfort is part of the healing process. Even when it feels hard, you're making progress and creating space for growth.
How long will therapy last?
I recommend weekly or bi-weekly sessions but will work with each clients schedules. We will work collaboratively at each session to create an agenda that will primarily be driven by what you’d like to discuss or work on. The length of therapy is quite variable based on your motivation, severity of issues to resolve, and work efforts outside of therapy sessions. On average, many people feel that they have obtained what they are looking for in 10-25 sessions.
Do you take insurance?
I am able to accept cash and credit card. I am in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Health Partners, Cigna, Optum, UHC, United, Medica, and Aetna/FirstHealth Network. For all other insurance provider’s, I am considered “out of network” and can provide a receipt for your reimbursement. Depending upon your insurance carrier plan, you may be able to fund your therapy through your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA). If you will be using such an arrangement, please speak with me to ensure you receive the necessary documentation.
Will there be homework?
Most of the change that happens with counseling occurs between sessions. We are only together for an hour, and then you venture back into your world where you can apply what we discussed. There will usually be skills to work on after each time we meet.
